Description

How can we effectively study the survival strategies of organizations that endure for centuries? This paper proposes using metapopulation analysis, a modeling technique borrowed from biology, to construct models of organizational development from historical records. Hyperlongevity is a theory in the process of being built. The manager's strategies can be studied from the model. This approach offers a unique method for studying the strategies managers pursue to achieve hyperlongevity. This paper aims to provide a modeling technique, called metapopulation analysis, that helps to construct a model of an organization’s development from the historical record of what the organization did. It provides a new method for studying the survival strategies employed by organizations that exhibit hyperlongevity.

This paper is published in the Journal of Organizational Change Management. It addresses the journal's interest in organizational evolution by employing an approach from biology. This study contributes to understanding organizational change. It also fits within the journal's scope.
