Description

How can businesses ensure trust and security in online transactions? This paper examines the potential of the Internet to serve as an information highway for electronic commerce (e-commerce) and electronic data interchange (EDI). While traditional EDI involves prior arrangements and dedicated lines, Internet-based EDI offers wider small business participation. However, it also introduces concerns about security and guaranteed delivery. The study addresses the challenges and opportunities of using the Internet for business. The potential for fraud and deception is highlighted as a significant downside of Internet EDI, given the lack of inherent security measures. Commonly expressed concerns include reliability, scalability, ease of use, and payment security. The research explores misconceptions and realities of Internet-based business practices. Ultimately, this paper concludes that the Internet holds substantial potential for becoming an information highway, provided that security and trust issues are adequately addressed. Overcoming these challenges is essential for facilitating widespread adoption of Internet-based EDI and maximizing the benefits of electronic commerce for businesses of all sizes.
