Description

Can optimizing workflows unlock greater productivity in process technology? This research explores the potential for improvements in process technology productivity through changes in work organization. Using a bank's check processing system with implemented information-based process technology as a case study, the paper employs simulation to assess benefits of alternative workflow scheduling rules. Results, based on hypothetical settings using data from an actual check processing center, demonstrate the cost advantages of introducing a priority-based scheduling rule. The implications and challenges related to practical implementation are discussed. This study highlights the importance of integrating technological advancements with effective workflow management to achieve optimal performance. It provides valuable insights for organizations seeking to maximize the return on investment in process technology through strategic workflow optimization.
