Description

Can flexible manufacturing systems give Indian companies a competitive edge? This research explores the strategic considerations for implementing Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) in the Indian manufacturing sector. As markets rapidly change and customers demand greater variety, the concept of flexibility in manufacturing becomes crucial. FMS offers a way to meet these demands by enabling the efficient production of diverse products with shorter lead times, improved productivity, and enhanced quality. The paper reviews the current state of the Indian machine tool industry, assesses the potential of FMS, and examines key strategic issues influencing its implementation. It integrates these insights into a four-stage strategic framework designed to guide manufacturing firms in India. By providing a structured approach to FMS implementation, this research helps Indian manufacturing firms strategically leverage advanced manufacturing technologies. The framework’s insights will guide future research and practical applications, especially as Indian industries strive for greater efficiency and responsiveness in a competitive global market.

Published in the International Journal of Operations & Production Management, this paper aligns with the journal’s focus on advancing knowledge in operations and supply chain management. By proposing a strategic framework for implementing FMS in India, the research addresses a key area of interest for the journal's readership, contributing to the development of practical strategies for improving manufacturing competitiveness.
