Lesser's biography, Enchanting Rebel—The Secret of Adah Isaacs Menken, failed to report any new discovery as to the actress’ childhood. Kendall met with limited success. In an article for the, he published the results of an investigation that supported the claims that Menken was born in New Orleans, that the year of her birth was 1839, and that her maiden name was Ada Berthe Theodore. Also, the study suggested that the actress’ parents were Auguste Theodore, a “free man of color,” and Magdaleine Jean Louis Jan‐neaux.
