This paper analyzes cross-sectional data from 1982 to 1992 to identify the components of profitability in this significant segment of the US service sector. With a focus on the largest division of the US service sector, the study identifies relative market share and revenue per employee as statistically significant factors impacting profitability. Focuses on a least squares analysis of cross‐sectional information. This study has demonstrated that market share and revenue per employee are statistically significant components of profitability in this sector. Ultimately, the paper offers strategic insights for service managers, particularly those focused on enhancing profitability.
